Bigger is better—or so designers will have us believe this season. Collections from Paris, Milan and New York showed over-the-top, oversized baubles that would make even the most extravagant bling lover blush. Call it a reaction to the diminutive jewels of spring, but fall’s statement baubles are monumental in scale and heft. At Balenciaga, Nicholas Ghesquiere punctuated his techno-chic looks with fist-sized crystal drop earrings. Oscar de la Renta and Lanvin showed industrial-sized necklaces heaving with megawatt gems that could double as breastplate armor. Elaborating on the modern-day Joan of Arc theme, designer duo and sisters Phoebe and Annette Stephens of Anndra Neen offer imperious hammered bronze cuffs and chokers—inspired by French medieval armor while Monique Pean’s chunky Peruvian opal necklaces recall the regal splendor of an Amazonian queen.
