Athens-based Ilias Lalaounis is one part jeweler, one part jewelry historian. With collections that read like chapter titles from an ancient history text (Paleolithic & Neolithic, Byzantine, and Ilion – Helen of Troy), Lalounis’ respect for his craft’s heritage is evident. And his commitment runs deep. Lalaounis employs long forgotten techniques, for instance, having mastered granulation, filigree, and hand-hammering. Perhaps the only thing more impressive than the jeweler’s artistic commitment to history is his philanthropic one – The Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum houses 4,000 artifacts not far from his shop at the base of the Acropolis.
